With summer finally looking like it might be on the horizon, race courses are springing into action for some of the biggest sporting social events of the year. While this weekend’s FA Cup Final will see pubs fit to bursting, next weekend's Epsom Derby and up-coming Royal Ascot will be altogether more suave affairs. So if you're planning on suiting up and joining the horsey crowd, we've put together some suggestions on how to look (and feel) your best in any equestrian related situation.
Epsom Ladies’ Day - 2nd June
This one’s called Ladies’ Day for a reason. Sorry guys, but we don’t want the men to draw anyone’s attention away from the dazzling array of outfits into which the women have poured so much passion and flair. Equally though, there’s no excuse for scruffiness. With this in mind, a timeless, understated look is the order of the day – have a look through our range of slim-fit three-piece suits for a little inspiration on how to covertly use colour.
Epsom Derby Day – 3rd June
After the thrills and formalities of Ladies’ Day at Epsom, the comparatively relaxed atmosphere of Derby Day calls for appropriately casual sartorial choices. Let your hair down in style with a simple, elegant combination of semi-formal shirt with a subtle pattern, a well-fitting blazer in light summer grey and a pair of smart jeans to take you from posing near the paddock to nodding along to Jo Wiley on the decks at the Duchess Stand After-Party.
Galway Races 31st July – 6th August
Horseracing is, after all, a quintessentially summertime tradition and Galway’s annual racing festival takes places at the height of summer (theoretically at least – it is the West Coast of Ireland, after all).
The long term forecast looks good but if the weather doesn’t hold out, you’ll need something slim enough to be comfortable beneath your overcoat, and warm enough to withstand the changeability of the elements. A two piece x-slim suit with this feature shirt-sleeve style shoulder line will minimise bulkiness under a stylish raincoat, while still keeping your look suitably sharp. (Pop into our store in the city’s Eyre Square to shop any of these items!)
Qatar Goodwood Festival – 1st -5th August
Glorious Goodwood is a key date in the British social calendar and dare we say it, one of the cooler venues on the racing circuit (Tinie Tempah is playing here next weekend).
Planning an outfit that will allow you to stay comfortable in the heat is an important consideration. Suspend your doubts awhile and check out our range of light two-piece suits, ideal for soaking up the rays without losing your cool. The small amount of stretch in this x-slim 2 piece suit will keep you comfortable roaming around the stands, while the cotton mix fabric keeps everything nicely breathable, so you won't build up too much of a sweat for the all-important photo finish.
Keep it suitably understated with a monochrome look – plain, light blue formal shirt, dark blue wool-silk tie, two tone black and navy Derby shoe and finish with a neatly folded dark blue pocket square.
Remember, the essence of style is dressing appropriately for the occasion, so take our advice to avoid being an also-ran in the style stakes this racing season.
