Spotlight: Talmont

There’s a density to Talmont’s work, a fibrous richness of texture, the likes of which is difficult to find among the work of other young acts with whom they might lazily be associated. Yes, their clear understanding of how to meld exotically-sourced hip-hop sampling with crystalline pop hooks places them somewhere close to the territory of several trip-hop revivalist contemporaries, but at its core, the Talmont sound has little to do with such nostalgic approaches. Latest single, “Moving Further Than Before”, is a useful example here; on first listen, this seems a fairly straightforward piece of progressive pop music, hooky enough to engage the casual listener, yet with enough nuance and complexity to satisfy a more attentive audience.

However, upon repeated listens, the depths of this track begin to reveal themselves. The devil is in the detail here: the drum track occupies an uncanny sweet spot between organic groove and mechanised precision, the push-and-pull basslines make their presences felt only exactly when required, and the song’s climactic, soaring peak is expertly timed. The accompanying video, produced by Tobias Benjamin Lever, similarly fuses challenging intricacies with an accessible sense of polish. Watch below:

Formerly a largely studio-focused concern, Talmont will take to London’s Paper Dress Vintage on 2nd September as a newly invigorated live band. “Moving Further Away” is out now on Ont’ Sofa Records. Stream it on Spotify here.
